Recollection of Warsaw.
By a polish lady.

[…] Superb ball are given in Warsaw. […] The ball was invariable opened by majestic polonaise. This dance sets in motion both yang and old […], for the polonaise is the only dance which affords  an opportunity for conversation. The mazurka, now so fashionable throughout  Europe, has in Poland, so indefinable charm; – it is the fandango of the Poles. The first notes of the national melody diffuse animation through the ball-room and one mazurka is frequently prolongated for several hours at session. As to French quadrilles, they are not by  any means popular in Warsaw, and it is only dancers pas excellence who venture on them.
